Over the past four decades, the park has been dedicating to collecting, preserving, cultivating, breeding, researching and utilizing camellia cultivars and wild species. The park maintains a register of all the camellias and their respective locations, and is opening free to the public. Every year, when various camellia flowers are in full blossom, the scenery is so spectacular and amazing that it attracts a constant stream of visitors all the day.
This park is very famous for possessing one of the largest collections of camellia ornamental cultivars in China. Over 12000 individuals of approximately 1525 camellia cultivars and species have been planted in the Camellia Garden of the park, which were collected from the United States, Japan and other countries as well as Yunnan, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Sichuan and many other provinces of China, respectively. The Camellia Garden covers nearly 100 hectares, which are divided into seven different regions, namely, Sect. Camellia region, Sect. Paracamellia region, Sect. Chrysantha region, Sect. Theopsis region, Sect. Oleifera region, Fragrant Camellia Garden and the International Camellia Garden of Friendship. Many special and valuable camellia species or cultivars have been conserved in the park. For example, five thousand individuals of Golden Camellias are preserved there, constituting the largest population of Golden Camellia in Guangdong Province. About one hundred individuals of different camellia cultivars have been planted over 30 years which have already been 4-6 meters high. Moreover, the park has been undertaking lots of camellia-relevant research programs such as breeding and cultivation as well as utilization, and trying to reinforce cooperation and communication at home and abroad.
