Shanghai Botanical Garden
Shanghai Botanical Garden is located in the Xuhui District of Shanghai, China and covers an area of 81.86 hectares. The construction of the garden was started in 1974. Through hard efforts of several generations, the garden has turned into a well-known modern comprehensive botanical garden that incorporates plant introduction, domestication, exhibition, research and public education.
The Penjing Garden of SHBG
The exhibition areas are composed of 22 specialized gardens, such as Plant Evolution District (Conifer Garden, Magnolia Garden, Peony Garden, Camellias and Azaleas Garden, Rose Garden, Maple Garden, Osmanthus Garden, Bamboo Garden), Penjing Garden, Herbal Garden, Orchid House, Exhibition Greenhouse and greening demonstration area. The Penjing Garden, Orchid House and Exhibition Greenhouse are popular in the world.
The Camellias Garden is one of the most important specialized gardens within SHBG with a history of more than 40 years. To date, there are around 850 individuals of 377 taxa (species or cultivars) in the genus Camellia and related genera in the family Theaceae displayed in the garden. More than 3900 potted camellia are cultivated in the nursery, including Camellia japonica, Camellia sasanqua, Camellia reticulata, Four Seasons Camellia Hybrids, Cluster-flowering camellias and etc..

SHBG has implemented Cluster-flowering camellia germplasm innovation plan by utilizing the abundant natural resources of Camellia sect. Theopsis species in China. We have bred new cultivars of Cluster-flowering camellia with long-lasting seasons, small and exquisite full blooms, red young leaves and compact plant shape, adding bright colors to the urban landscape in winter and early spring. Besides, the high resistance capacity of Cluster-flowering camellia for strong light, high temperature and alkaline soil, making the gardening management easy and maintenance cost low.

SHBG has bred 21 new cultivars of Cluster-flowering camellia, among which 15 were authorized by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, 5 were approved to be the Excellent Cultivars of Shanghai Forest Trees, and one was authorized by United States Patent Office. We have developed the patent technology for propagation of cuttings of Cluster-flowering camellia, which has improved the propagation efficiency and achieved industrial breeding. We also developed the cultivating and engineering supporting technology that are applied in many provinces and cities with wide recognition by citizens, camellia lovers, researchers, and News medium.

Every day from 7 AM to 5 PM The special areas: the two conservatories, the Penjing Garden and the Chinese Cymbidium Room are open from: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
Additionally, these special areas require an extra fee. Regular tickets: 15 RMB/person. Including the special areas, specified above: 40 RMB/person. Discounts are available for children and seniors.
