Trewithen Gardens

Trewithen CamelliasGarden Overview

At every turn of Trewithen’s level graveled pathways, there is some new wonder to behold. From champion trees to rare shrubs, from a wildflower meadow to woodland glades, exotic fern collections and tree top viewing platforms, it would be hard to find anywhere more beautiful or more intriguing than Trewithen's deservedly famous garden. Raised viewing platforms take visitors closer to the blooms, many of which are high in the trees, providing a rare opportunity to see over the floral canopy.

Our CamelliasTrewithen Red

George Johnstone joined a syndicate with J.C.Williams from Caerhays, amongst others, who sponsored George Forrest on his plant-hunting trips to China in the early 20th century. The direct result of these trips are still seen in an area of the garden called ‘Camellia walk’ either side of the path flanked with plants grown from wild-collected seed including C. saluenensis and wild form C. reticulata. Another important plant is the very fine C. ‘Donation’ which was raised at Borde Hill in Sussex by Colonel Stephenson-Clarke. George Johnstone was given a plant and, because the original died before being propagated, all C. x williamsii ‘Donation' in the world owe their existence to the one at Trewithen.

George also received some of the Kunming reticulatas from Lammerts and Peer in the late 1950’s and two examples, C. 'Lion Head' and C.'Noble Pearl', can be seen today.

Following on from George Johnstone, we still source wild-collected camellia species and continually plant good hybrids to further enhance the collection.

Famous camellia include our original C. 'Donation' and a lovely red, award winning, form of C.saluenensis selected by George Johnstone and named C. saluenensis ‘Trewithen Red’.
