Camellia japonica was imported in Australia and New Zealand since the first half of the Nineteenth Century. Camellias have reached a great degree of popularity, thanks to the mild climate, which range  from almost tropical in Australia to temperate in Tasmania and New Zealand. Thanks to such conditions, even the most tender camellias (e.g. yellow camellias, Camellia changii, Camellia amplexicaulis) can thrive outdoors.

Both Australia and New Zealand feature various Gardens of Excellence.
